Queer History Project Press release
Northern BC Queer Connection Society Secures Funding from WAGE for Groundbreaking Queer History Project
The Northern BC Queer Connection Society is proud to announce that it has received funding from Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE) to support its Queer History Project. This initiative will document, preserve, and celebrate the rich and diverse queer history of Northern British Columbia through documentary and archival materials. Running from October 2024 to March 2027, the project will fill a significant gap in the recorded history of the region’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community. We are thrilled to have the support of WAGE for this important project. Northern British Columbia’s queer history is a vital part of our cultural fabric, yet it remains underrepresented and often overlooked. This project will ensure that the stories, struggles, and triumphs of our community are preserved and celebrated for generations to come.
The Queer History Project will include two components:
1. Documentary
A professionally produced film capturing the voices, experiences, and milestones of Northern
BC’s queer community. The documentary will feature interviews with community members,
activists, and allies, highlighting their resilience and contributions.
2. Archive
An accessible repository of historical interviews, stories, documents, photographs, and memorabilia, serving as a lasting resource for researchers, educators, and the public. The Northern BC Queer Connection Society will collaborate with local historians, including Dr. Theresa Healy, filmmakers 6IX SIGMA Productions, community members, and organizations to bring this project to life. The culmination of the project will be a public screening of the documentary, providing an opportunity for the community to come together in celebration and reflection. This project is about more than preserving history; it’s about fostering pride, understanding, and connection within our community and beyond. We are excited to see the impact it will have, not just in Northern BC but across Canada as a whole.
